Building Maintenance Technician - Facilities - Juneau - Open Until Filled

Building Maintenance Technician

Pay Grade(s): 7 ($25.01+ DOE)
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt


Purpose:
The Building Maintenance Technician performs general maintenance, repair and construction of buildings and equipment in one or more craft or trade. Independently perform skilled maintenance work across multiple trades with minimal supervision.


Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Perform a variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment; prioritize, schedule, assign and coordinate the work of assigned staff to accomplish a wide variety of duties related to the building trades.
• Construct, rebuild and repair equipment and facilities including various wood and metal structures, equipment, and furniture; prepare surfaces for painting and varnishing and apply surface coverings as required.
• Conduct preventative maintenance and routine inspections on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems
• Diagnose and repair facility issues independently
• Operate a variety of equipment and machines including saws, drill presses and various hand and power tools to perform repair and maintenance work; maintain tools and equipment in a safe, clean, and proper working condition.
• Assure compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, State, and local codes, regulations and requirements.
• Maintain various records related to labor, materials, and work orders.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
• Strong knowledge of building maintenance and repair, including skills in multiple trades such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to diagnose and independently resolve facility maintenance issues across various systems and equipment.
• Skilled in constructing, rebuilding, and repairing equipment, structures, and furniture, with proficiency in wood and metalwork.
• Experience in performing preventative maintenance and routine inspections on building systems to ensure proper functioning.
• Proficient in the safe and effective use of hand and power tools, including saws, drill presses, and other maintenance equipment.
• Strong leadership and coordination abilities to prioritize, assign, and schedule tasks for maintenance staff and ensure timely project completion.
• Familiarity with safety protocols and regulations, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local codes.
• Ability to prepare surfaces for painting and varnishing and apply surface coverings to maintain the appearance and functionality of buildings and equipment.
• Skilled in maintaining accurate records related to labor, materials, and work orders for tracking maintenance activities.
• Physical strength and stamina to perform manual labor tasks, including lifting and working in various environments.
• Excellent organizational skills to track maintenance schedules, repairs, and preventatives effectively.


Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
• High School Diploma or GED
• Three years journeyman level experience in one or more trades.
• Knowledge of trade tools, equipment, materials, methods, and techniques used in skilled and general maintenance and repair involving at least one of the following: electrical, electronics, heating, and air conditioning, locksmithing, plumbing, carpentry, painting, or welding.
• Must be 21 years of age with a Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive tasks involving standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crouching, and work in both indoor and outdoor environments—including adverse weather—while operating tools and equipment requiring manual dexterity and physical stamina.

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

• Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
• Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
