PURPOSE
The JOM Education Counselor provides culturally responsive academic, social-emotional, and
postsecondary support to Alaska Native and Native American students in the Juneau School District through
the Johnson OMalley Supplemental Native Education Program. The role is focused on building student
success through advocacy, tutoring coordination, family engagement, and connection to community and
school-based resources.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Build strong, trust-based relationships with Alaska Native and Native American students and families.
Communicate regularly with school staff to advocate for student needs and ensure coordinated support.
Identify students with academic or personal challenges and connect them with appropriate internal or
external services, with follow-up as needed.
Collaborate with teachers to develop and support individualized academic or tutoring plans.
Serve as a positive role model to promote cultural pride and self-confidence in Native youth.
Guide and encourage students in exploring postsecondary pathways, including college, training, and
employment.
Monitor student attendance, GPA, test scores, and graduation progress; maintain accurate and up-to-date
documentation.
Participate in student/parent/teacher meetings and coordinate case management as needed.
Liaise with local, state, Tribal, and federal agencies to connect students and families with educational,
social, and economic resources.
Promote student enrichment and cultural engagement through JOM and Youth Engagement
programming and partnerships.
Maintain a service calendar and track all student, staff, and family contacts using approved data systems.
Prepare and submit monthly reports and student impact summaries to the Program Coordinator.
Attend required trainings, meetings, and professional development sessions.
Meet with the Program Coordinator for at least 1.5 hours per month to complete reports and review
progress.
Perform other duties as assigned.
NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Working knowledge of educational support systems and community resources in the Juneau area.
Must be able to work with Juneau School District personnel and the Native community in addressing the
identified needs of Native students
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage students, families, and school staff
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and maintain confidentiality
Culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach and demonstrated commitment to supporting
Alaska Native students
Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally between school sites
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic data entry systems
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
Two to four years of college experience
At least four years of experience in education, youth development, or social services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
Bachelors degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field
Teaching certification or school-based experience
UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring
routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft
or ferry may be required.
