Community Navigator
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade(s): 8-9
Purpose: The Community Navigator will serve as a liaison between community residents and Tlingit & Haida to enhance local knowledge of services, direct requests for technical assistance, and be a resource for general questions and concerns regarding Tlingit & Haida services.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Be the local resource for questions and concerns with direct contact to Tlingit & Haida to quickly resolve issues.
- Facilitate communication from Tlingit & Haida to the appropriate department and personnel.
- Communicate with other Tlingit & Haida departments to coordinate services as needed.
- Create strong relationships with service providers and have strong working knowledge of what services they provide.
- Keep open communication with community leaders and volunteers who may have immediate questions or situations that need to be addressed.
- Create and utilize a system to check in with community leaders and service providers to ensure accurate information and appropriate follow-up.
- Collaborate and build relationships with other Liaisons, Navigators and Field Managers (in and out of the community) regarding regional services.
- Proactively connect with Tlingit & Haida staff traveling to the community to inform them of issues and requests.
- Promote educational opportunities to expose students and other citizens to potential careers and opportunities available through Tlingit & Haida.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
- Knowledge of Alaska Natives, Alaska Native cultures, and rural Alaska.
- Knowledge of Tribal, State, federal programs.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to use video teleconference equipment, or ability to learn technical skills.
- Excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands.
- Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications and platforms.
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
- Associate degree in business or related field
- Two (2) years’ related experience
- Must be 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license
- Substitution for Degree: High School diploma and four (4) years’ related experience

- The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.
Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:
- Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
- Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
