Graphic Designer

Pay Grade(s): 9-10 (Starts @ $30.26+ DOE)
Purpose: The Graphic Designer plays a key role in supporting the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska’s internal and external communications, as well as its Printing & Engraving Services. This position is responsible for developing compelling visual materials that uphold the Tribe’s identity across digital media, printed materials, signage, merchandise, and engraved products.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Communications Support
- Conceptualize and create original designs based on project requirements or client briefs.
- Develop visual assets for digital and print campaigns including flyers, social media graphics, brochures, infographics, and signage.
- Ensure all materials align with Tlingit & Haida’s branding, cultural values, and communication goals.
- Collaborate with Communications staff, departments, and leadership to fulfill project needs.
- Support events and outreach efforts with culturally responsive visual design.
- Assist with photo editing, basic video graphics, and layout support as needed.
- Printing & Engraving Support
- Create production-ready designs for apparel, mugs, plaques, signage, and promotional items.
- Generate and prepare artwork for engraving on various materials (wood, metal, acrylic, etc.).
- Work with print shop staff to ensure artwork meets print and production specifications.
- Assist with managing job requests, design files, and customer approvals.
- Maintain an organized archive of templates, logos, and design assets for re-use.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign); CorelDRAW or engraving software experience is a plus.
- Familiarity with apparel design, vector art, and production file setup.
- Strong understanding of branding, typography, and layout principles.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Familiarity with Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or related field.
- Two (2) years of design experience in a communications or production setting.
- Portfolio of design work required.
Preferred Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
- Experience working with printing, engraving, or merchandise design preferred.

- The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.
Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:
- Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
- Certain positions at Tlingit & Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
