Exemption Status: Exempt
Pay Grade(s): 12-14 ($78,526.50+ DOE)

Purpose: The Environmental Lab Manager (ELM) will work on current and emerging environmental issues affecting Tribal properties and communities, and support the goals outlined by the Tribal Council. The ELM will coordinate and manage all laboratory staff, oversee protocol development, serve as primary project liaison, and provide quality control for all methods and techniques developed in the laboratory. The Environmental Specialist will develop and implement a culturally appropriate environmental laboratory program that supports water quality analysis, contaminants in subsistence foods, and other testing that will support Tribal communities.


Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Collect and maintain information on environmental data, program resources, and funding
• Experience collecting and analyzing environmental data. Ability to perform complex laboratory task independently and in a timely manner.
• Develop working protocols and SOPs for analysis of total and dissolved metals, total mercury, total sulfate, total alkalinity, pH, total suspended solids (TSS), hardness as CaCO3, total cyanide, total and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, total nitrate/nitrite-N, ammonia-N, and total organic nitrogen.
• Maintain clean and functional laboratory space, benchtops, inventory, and safety equipment.
• Oversee laboratory technicians and analysts
• Manage all laboratory data in provided databases and ensure proper data reporting to agencies, project partners, and Tribal leadership
• Work with Tribal communities and youth to address environmental issues
• Identify, research and analyze environmental issues that can build laboratory capacity
• Create effective outreach and media posts
• Travel to rural villages and regional meetings in and out of state as requested
• Prepare grant reports and internal environmental reports to support Tlingit and Haida’s annual and monthly reports
• Other duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
• Experience working with environmental programs
• Extensive experience in a laboratory setting managing staff, providing oversight of all laboratory methods and techniques
• Extensive experience with laboratory equipment and procedures, specifically focused on water quality analysis, HPLC, qPCR, LCMS-MS, and ELISA.
• Ability to develop and implement complex environmental program/projects
• Ability to travel using all forms of commercial transportation
• Ability to work effectively with local, state and federal agencies and tribes
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office products
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills


Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
• Bachelor of Science degree in natural resource or environmental management or closely related field, preferably chemistry.
• Two years of supervisory experience
• Two years of experience in a laboratory setting; additional education in the environmental field may be substituted for experience on a full-time equivalency basis
• Must be 21 years of age with a Valid driver’s license

• The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.
Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:
• Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
• Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
