Equipment Operator

Pay Grade(s): 9-11 ($29.66-$46.83 DOE)
Purpose: This position is responsible for driving the loader/plow trucks to ensure Tlingit & Haida (T&H) grounds, and other properties are kept free of snow and ice and parking areas are plowed. This position will also be responsible for maintaining vehicles and equipment.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
Responsible for driving the loader to remove snow and ice from parking areas, alleys, sidewalks for all Juneau T&H facilities
Responsible for independently monitoring the weather at all times (24 hours) during the winter months and reporting to work as needed to ensure all T&H parking lots are kept free from snow and/or ice.
This position is expected to identify and use appropriate equipment for each job including but not limited to a hand shovel, snow blower, 4-wheeler, regular truck with plow, sander, or a loader with attachments.
Must understand and implement required regulations, safety practices, and procedures at all times.
Operates sander or equivalent to spread sand, salt, and other chemicals on parking areas, streets, and other similar areas as necessary.
May assist the Transportation Manager with the procurement of consumable supplies necessary for all transportation department equipment, and for maintaining an adequate inventory of sand, rock salt, and other snow melt substances.
Performs a broad range of maintenance activities including cleaning, maintaining and repairing drainage structures; placing and repairing signs.
Loads and unloads trucks with sand, salt and other chemicals, as required.
Regularly communicates with Transportation Manager to determine priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
Basic safety practices regarding physical work, i.e. proper lifting techniques as position will lift, carry and stack heavy objects.
Knowledge and Ability to operate a loader (heavy equipment)
Working knowledge of safety requirements for utilization of available equipment
Ability to work a sporadic schedule, as needed, including night and early morning hours, and weekends.
Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools
Ability to communicate effectively verbally
Moderate mathematical skills
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures
Ability to lift 50 pounds in repetition
Must be able to work outside in winter conditions for an extended period of time
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
High School diploma or GED
Must be 21 years of age with a Valid Driver's License with no driving infractions/violations in last 3 years.
Two years experience operating light motorized equipment and heavy equipment including front-end loaders, backhoes, and dump trucks.
Preferred Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
Two years experience in snow removal
Class "A" State of Alaska Commercial Driver License
