Regional Geoscience Monitoring Specialist
INFORMATION

PURPOSE
The Regional Geoscience Specialist (monitoring) assists in developing local capacity for precipitation monitoring that warns the community of hazards associated with extreme precipitation by connecting communities throughout SE Alaska to a team of research scientists. A can-do attitude and willingness to pitch in where needed are essential to the specialist’s success. This project requires local citizens to partner with scientists to co-produce warning systems, the Regional Science Coordinator’s role as a liaison is critical to its success. The Regional Geoscience monitoring specialist will work directly with “community connectors” who are community members based at tribal and government entities in the participating communities and communicate information between these “community connectors”, community members, the project manager, and the technical members of the project team. Additionally, the position provides field and technical support to project partners such as maintenance on high elevation weather stations

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Collaborate with a team developing early warning systems to convey risks from geohazards associated with extreme precipitation events in southeast Alaska, including landslides and flooding
• Point contact for community members and stakeholders
• Coordinating logistics, deploying and maintaining instruments in the field, collecting data and providing summaries and participate in communicating project finding to the community and promote awareness of risk
• Willingness to learn how, or ability to, troubleshoot electronic
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including approaches such as philanthropy and federal/state partnerships. Resource and budget management will include fundraising, grant writing and management, and in-kind support development
• Provide field season logistical, technical, and social support for crew leads.
• Support communities and Tribes in developing their capacity to participate and benefit from youth environmental stewardship and conservation co-management activities.
• Maintain programs of work, safety plans, partner projects, training, and evaluation.
• Pool and share resources for common interests and needs across the region and facilitate communication and crew leaders’ relationship development.
• Develop the stewardship partnership and facilitate steering committee meetings.
• Work in Coordination with the Guardians Program to support youth in employment, vocational skill building, and higher education mentorship/placement.
• Assist youth in applying for scholarships, conferences, and professional development opportunities.
• Collaborate with community, regional partners, and the Indigenous Guardians Network.
• Identify and develop future youth programs with existing partners.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Experience in communicating with the public both in writing and verbally.
• Strong interpersonal communications and relationship-building skills.
• Experience in managing complex or multiple projects, including managing budgets and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners across multiple disciplines.
• Catalyze engagement and collaboration with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work within a network of organizations with varying goals and practices.
• Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office products.
• Ability to travel using all forms of commercial transportation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Two years of experience at the Specialist level or above in an environmental or natural resource field.
• One year experience in grants management.
• Familiarity with the Tlingit and Haida cultures: contemporary, traditional, political, social.
• Valid driver's license.
Substitution:
Additional education in the environmental, natural resource field and youth-focused programs may be substituted for experience on a full-time equivalency basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Associates degree in an Environmental or Natural Resource field.
UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
