INFORMATION

Salary Grade(s): G-8 ($26.97 - $30.35 + DOE) / Non-Exempt
Hours of Work: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Employment Category: Regular Full-Time


PURPOSE
Incumbent is responsible for providing the Juneau Johnson O’Malley Supplemental Native Education
Program’s counseling/tutoring service in the Juneau School District.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports To: Johnson O’Malley Program Coordinator
Supervises: N/A
Liaison To: Assigned School District


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Assists in developing and setting up a referral system for use by school officials to aid in identifying
Native students with special needs.
• Works with the schools, on behalf of Native students, establishing rapport and good working
relationships between students, parents, teachers and officials.
• Identifies Native students who have special circumstances and needs, make referrals to proper
agencies for action and provides necessary follow-up services.
• Serves as a role model for young Native students in acquiring a positive self image.
• Provides career and post-secondary educational guidance to Native students.
• Makes regular assessments of Native student academic needs and collaborates with teachers to
develop appropriate counseling/tutorial services for the students.
• Interprets student test scores to allow a better understanding of student progress.
• Coordinates and participates in student/parent/teacher conferences.
• Contacts and develops communication with local, private, Federal, and State agencies for use in
referring parents and students in need of economic, social or educational assistance.
• Identifies Native students, monitors grade point average for each; provides counseling and tutoring
as needed for students who need additional supports; encourages average performers and encourages
exemplary programs for gifted.
• Monitors student test scores, attendance and absences.
• Designates a minimum of one and one-half (1.5) hours with the Program Coordinator per month to
complete reports and assignments.
• Develops a calendar of activities and necessary forms to support daily collection of data for
evaluation.
• Records all contacts and issues reports to the Program Coordinator.
• Maintains a file for each student, recording attendance, grade point averages, all reports pertinent to
the success of the student and contact with parents and school officials.
• Attends meetings, workshops, and/or classes that may be required to develop professional,
supervisory, and management skills.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• The incumbent must have a working knowledge of educational programs available to students,
particularly in the Juneau area
• Must be able to work with Juneau School District personnel and the Native community in addressing the
identified needs of Native students
• Must display strong communication skills.
• Must provide local transportation and keep accurate mileage records.
• Must have ability to provide outreach to students in need of services,
• Must have demonstrated ability and desire to work with the Native community.
• Working knowledge of MS Office suite computer programs.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Two to four years of college experience
• Four years of related work experience


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Teaching certification or BA in education


UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring
routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft
or ferry may be required.
